In January 1732 the regimental surgeon Johannes Fluchinger (Flückinger in most modern writing) was sent from Belgrade to the frontier village of Medveđa, which the print spells Medvegia, to look into reports that the dead were killing the living. This is his report, as the Nuremberg printer Johann Adam Schmidt published it later that year under the title Visum et Repertum, Latin for “seen and found”. The pamphlet runs to 43 pages: the report fills pages 3 to 11, followed by the 1725 report on Peter Plogojowitz (pages 12 to 15; its first printing is on its own page) and an appendix on the dead who chew in their graves.
Visum & Repertum.

Seen and found: on the so-called vampires, or blood-suckers, at Medvegia in Serbia, on the Turkish border, 7 January 1732.
It had been reported that in the village of Medvegia the so-called vampires had killed several people by sucking their blood. So by high order of the honourable high command here I was sent there to investigate the matter fully, with officers detailed for the purpose and two junior surgeons. I held this inquiry in the presence of the captain of the Stallath haiduk company, Gorschiz, the Hadnack, the Bariactar and the oldest haiduks of the village, and heard them as follows.
They state with one voice that about five years ago a haiduk of this village named Arnond Paole broke his neck in a fall from a hay wagon. In his lifetime he had often said that near Gossowa, in Turkish Serbia, he had been tormented by a vampire, and that he had therefore eaten earth from the vampire’s grave and smeared himself with its blood to be rid of the torment. Twenty or thirty days after his death some people complained that this Arnond Paole was tormenting them, and he did in fact kill four people. To put an end to the evil, on the advice of their Hadnack, who had been present at such events before, they dug Arnond Paole up about forty days after his death. They found him whole and undecayed. Fresh blood had flowed from his eyes, nose, mouth and ears; his shirt, the sheet over him and the coffin were soaked with blood; the old nails of his hands and feet had come off with the skin, and new ones had grown in their place. Seeing from this that he was a real vampire, they drove a stake through his heart, as is their custom, at which he gave a clearly audible groan and let out a great deal of blood. The same day they burned the body to ashes and threw the ashes into the grave.
The same people state further that everyone tormented and killed by vampires must become a vampire too, and so they executed the four people mentioned above in the same way. They add that Arnond Paole attacked not only people but livestock, and sucked their blood. Since people have eaten the meat of those animals, it appears that vampires are here again: within three months seventeen people, young and old, have died, some of them within two or at most three days, with no illness before. The haiduk Jowiza reports that his daughter-in-law Stanacka went to bed fifteen days ago fresh and healthy, but at midnight started out of her sleep screaming, in fear and trembling, and said that a haiduk’s son named Milloe, who had died nine weeks before, had throttled her by the neck. After that she felt a great pain in her chest, grew worse hour by hour, and died on the third day.
That afternoon we went out to the cemetery with the oldest haiduks of the village, already named several times, to have the suspect graves opened and examine the bodies in them. When all had been dissected, this is what was found.
-
A woman named Stana, 20 years old, who died two months ago after an illness of three days following childbirth. Before her death she had said herself that she had smeared herself with a vampire’s blood, so that she and her child, which died just after birth and, carelessly buried, was half eaten by dogs, must both become vampires too. She was whole and undecayed. When the body was opened, the chest cavity held a quantity of fresh blood that had escaped from the vessels. The arteries, veins and ventricles of the heart were not filled with clotted blood, as they usually are. All the organs, the lungs, liver, stomach, spleen and intestines, were as fresh as in a healthy person. The womb, though, was very large and much inflamed on the outside, because the placenta and lochia had stayed inside her, and so it had fully putrefied. The skin of the hands and feet came away by itself with the old nails, and under it were fresh, lively skin and entirely new nails.
-
A woman named Miliza, about 60, who died after an illness of three months and was buried some ninety-odd days ago. Her chest held a great deal of liquid blood, and the other organs were in good condition, like the first woman’s. The haiduks standing round the dissection were all much amazed at her fat, full body. They said with one voice that they had known the woman well since her youth, and that all her life she had looked thin and dried up and had been so, and they insisted that she had reached this astonishing fatness in the grave. People also say that it was she who started the vampires this time, because she had eaten the meat of sheep killed by the earlier vampires.
-
An eight-day-old child, which had lain ninety days in the grave, was likewise in the vampire state.
-
A haiduk’s son, 16, who died of an illness of three days, was dug up after nine weeks in the ground and found like the other vampires.
-
Joachim, also a haiduk’s son, 17, died of an illness of three days and had been buried eight weeks and four days. At the dissection he was found in the same state.
-
A woman named Ruscha, who died after an illness of ten days and was buried six weeks ago. In her too I found much fresh blood, not only in the chest but at the bottom of the stomach, and the same showed in her child, eighteen days old, who died five weeks ago.
-
A girl of ten, who died two months ago, was found in the same state, whole and undecayed, with much fresh blood in the chest.
-
The Hadnack’s wife was dug up with her child. She died seven weeks ago; the child, eight weeks old, died 21 days ago. Mother and child were both found completely decayed, although their earth and graves were like those of the vampires buried nearest them.
-
A servant of the haiduk corporal here, named Rhade, 23, died after an illness of three months and was found completely decayed after five weeks in the grave.
-
The wife of the Bariactar here, with her child, who died five weeks ago, were likewise completely decayed.
-
In Stanche, a haiduk of 60 who died six weeks ago, I found a great deal of liquid blood in the chest and stomach, like the others. The whole body was in the vampire state already described so often.
-
Milloe, a haiduk of 25, who had lain six weeks in the ground, was also in that vampire state.
-
Stanoicka, a haiduk’s wife, 20, died of an illness of three days and was buried 18 days ago. At the dissection I found her face quite red, of a lively colour. As told above, she had been throttled by the neck at midnight by the haiduk’s son Milloe, and it could plainly be seen that she had on the right side, under the ear, a bluish, bloodshot mark a finger long. When she was taken out of the grave a quantity of fresh blood flowed from her nose. On dissection I found, as noted so often, truly balmy fresh blood, not only in the chest cavity but in the ventricle of the heart. All the organs were in perfectly healthy and good condition. The under-skin of the whole body, and the fresh nails of the hands and feet, were as good as fresh.
When the examination was over, the vampires had their heads struck off by the local Gypsies and were burned with their bodies, and the ashes were thrown into the river Morava. The decayed bodies were laid back in their graves. I confirm this, with the junior surgeons assigned to me. Done as above.

Notes
- Transcription: the long s is printed as s and line-break hyphens are closed up; spelling, capitals and punctuation are as printed, including “Täge” in entry 3 and the misprint “Unterterschrifft” for Unterschrifft in the attestation. The print sets names and Latin terms in roman type inside the Fraktur; that difference is not kept here.
- The report’s titles are kept as printed. Heyduck is the haiduk; Medveđa was a haiduk settlement at the southern tip of Habsburg Serbia (Mézes 2021, pp. 150, 154). Hadnack and Bariactar are the village’s own officers; Mézes notes that the five bodies found decayed (entries 8 to 10) all came from their households. “Stallathar” is an adjective formed from a place name, which the report does not explain; the Leipzig print has “Stallater”. “B.” before Fürstenbusch is not expanded in the print.
- Arnond Paole’s story, and Stanacka’s, are what the village’s leaders told the surgeons. Paole had been dead about five years, so his groan at the stake is hearsay. The Leipzig print turns it into “einen lauten Schrey”, a loud cry.
- The young wife who says Milloe throttled her is Stanacka in the testimony and Stanoicka in entry 13; the report treats them as the same woman.
- The prints disagree on some figures. Against this Nuremberg text, the Leipzig Acten-mäßige und umständliche Relation (1732) has Stanoicka dead 13 days rather than buried 18, Joachim buried 36 days, and the Hadnack’s child 8 months old, and it puts the ten-year-old girl before Ruscha.
- By our count the list has eleven bodies in the “vampire state”, counting Ruscha’s child, and five decayed. Other accounts give other totals; the article sets them side by side.
- This was the second visit to Medveđa that winter. The first, by the physician Johann Friedrich Glaser, did not end in executions; his father’s account of it is on its own page.
