Hermann Zotenberg edited and translated the Arabic Ghurar akhbar muluk al-Furs of al-Tha’alibi. His preface compares Tha’alibi’s account of Ardashir with Ferdowsi’s.
Translation
Ferdowsi’s accounts of the fate of Ardawan and his sons and of the war against the Kurds, the story of the Worm and Haftwad, that of Mihrak, the story of Ardawan’s daughter, her brother, the Mobed and the birth of Shapur, and the story of the birth of Hormizd are missing from our work.
Notes
- “Notre ouvrage” is Tha’alibi’s book. Zotenberg’s list gives the page numbers of the matching Tha’alibi passages for the episodes the two share (p. 473 onward for Ardashir).
- We rely on Zotenberg’s statement and did not read Tha’alibi’s Ardashir chapter line by line in the Arabic or the French; a keyword search of the library’s OCR of the French chapter (about pp. 473 to 487) found no worm, dragon or Haftwad.
